Face The Type

I wrote to Daryl Lang today in response to his blog post about rouge subway signs (back story: I was at the DeKalb Avenue station the other day and noticed a black-on-white sign, which Daryl posted here, and Google brought my curiosity to his website), in which I explained the difference between the MTA’s Helvetica font and the once-used Akzidenz-Grotesk (if you’re interested, here’s a great site on Helvetica and the NYC subway). Although the standard signage font nowadays is now Helvetica, there are still bits and pieces of Akzidenz-Grotesk around. I’ve always prefered the latter, as it’s a slightly cheerier font – the diagonal cuts of the c and e remind me of smiley faces. Lame, I know.

But then it got me thinking about which fonts I love and which I truly abhor.  Admit it, you have those two. Continue reading

Symphonic Overload

I never, ever learn. Ear plugs are a must for me at concerts.

Last night, my friend Jarid and I had an extra ticket to see Rooney and The Polyphonic Spree at Terminal 5 on 11th and 56th. Last minute, he asked me to go, so I said yes, even though I had no clue who Rooney was and my only experience with The Polyphonic Spree was a college roommate’s continuous playing of “Hold Me Now” on iTunes.

We got to the venue, which is one of the warehouses-turned-concert hall on the west side of Manhattan. Continue reading

Quite the Busy Bees

It’s been quite a busy weekend so far: Friday was the Light the Night Walk; yesterday was spent at South Street Seaport and meeting some of my Journey-fan friends for dinner and an Evolution concert; and today was spent sleeping way too late, bowling and eating frozen tomatoes. Continue reading

The Power of Hello

Ever since I was young, my mother would say “Hello” or “Good morning” to random people we passed on the street while out for a stroll. It’s a habit I’ve picked up on, but have limited to suburban areas.

Today, I was walking outside of my Manhattan office building, I passed a co-worker on the street and said, “Hello.” Well, the man next to her thought it was for him, and came up to me with this flirty look on his face. “Hey baby, how are you doing today?” he asked.

Well, this took me by surprise. I replied, “Uh, I was saying hello to my co-worker, but hello to you, too.” Well, if words could deflate! He said, “Oh…” and walked away. I felt sort of bad, but when I turned around a block later, he was still standing there and waved at me. I waved back.

Lexcie met me a few minutes later for lunch and I told him. Naturally, he laughed, because he knows he has nothing to worry about. (And not like I have anything to worry about either, because he tends to get hit on by the same gender.)

Well, I hope I didn’t ruin that poor guy’s weekend. Just goes to show you what kind of power one little word has.

Tale As Old As Time

So, Lexcie and I went to go see Beauty and the Beast on Broadway last Friday. It’s one of my all-time favorite movies, and I wanted to see the show before it officially closes in July. A co-worker did tell me there were some difference from the movie – mainly, it was more comedic and there were more songs. Overall, I gave it a seven out of ten stars.

Why not ten, considering it’s one of my favorite movies? Well, precisely that – it was a lot different from the movie. Continue reading
